Porf. George Tsatsaronis Presents Research on Hydrogen Economy and Decarbonization at SuST Conference

Sustainable Solutions at Times of Transition

The transition towards climate neutrality is driving increasing scientific and policy interest in emerging energy system concepts such as the hydrogen economy, Power-to-X technologies, and broader decarbonization strategies. These topics were at the center of a presentation delivered by Prof. George Tsatsaronis, EXCELLEND’s ERA Chair Holder, at the Sustainable Solutions at Times of Transition (SuST) conference, held on Nisyros Island, Greece, from 15–17 September 2025.

On 15 September 2025, Prof. Tsatsaronis presented his work entitled On the politics of hydrogen economy, power-to-X, and decarbonization, contributing to ongoing interdisciplinary discussions on the technological, economic, and policy dimensions of the energy transition.

The presentation addressed the evolving role of hydrogen as a potential energy carrier in future low-carbon systems, as well as the broader implications of Power-to-X pathways for integrating renewable energy into multiple sectors. In addition to technological considerations, the work also examined the policy and governance aspects shaping the deployment of these technologies, highlighting the complex interplay between innovation, regulation, and energy system transformation.

The SuST conference provided a platform for researchers and experts to exchange ideas on sustainable energy solutions during a period of rapid transition in global energy systems. Within this context, the presentation contributed to broader discussions on how emerging technologies can support decarbonization while ensuring system flexibility, security, and economic viability.

Prof. Tsatsaronis’ contribution reflects EXCELLEND’s commitment to advancing research that bridges engineering, systems analysis, and energy policy.
