As part of the 61st Demokritos Summer School 2026, Prof. George Tsatsaronis, ERA Chair of the EXCELLEND project, delivered a lecture on the “Challenges in the Decarbonization of the Energy Sector”.
In his presentation, Prof. Tsatsaronis examined the complex technical, economic and societal challenges associated with the transition to low-carbon energy systems. Emphasizing the need for integrated approaches rather than reliance on individual technologies, he discussed the importance of systems thinking, evidence-based decision-making and interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving successful decarbonization.
Drawing on decades of internationally recognized research, Prof. Tsatsaronis highlighted key developments and future perspectives in sustainable energy systems, renewable energy, hydrogen technologies and energy policy. His lecture provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and challenges shaping the global energy transition.
As part of the event, researchers from the EXCELLEND project also presented their work through two scientific posters. The first, “Advanced Energy Conversion and Storage Technologies for Sustainable Industry and Energy Systems,“ showcased research on innovative technologies supporting the transition to more sustainable industrial and energy systems. The second, “Artificial Intelligence Applied to Energy Systems,” highlighted the growing role of AI in improving the performance, efficiency and optimization of energy systems.
The poster presentations attracted considerable interest from Summer School participants, generating engaging discussions and numerous questions. The strong interaction with attendees provided an excellent opportunity for the EXCELLEND researchers to share their work, exchange ideas and contribute to the Summer School’s dynamic scientific environment.
